Student Visas

The Australian Overseas Student program regulates the entry of international students into Australia . The program only allows international students to study or train at Australian educational institutions that are registered or accredited by the Australian Government for those purposes. All courses offered to international students must also be registered for that purpose and these include a wide range of full fee award and non award courses. These are offered at Primary, Secondary and post secondary institutions.

To be able to study in Australia , students must be accepted for enrolment in a registered course and have a student visa issued by DIAC. The overseas student program is regulated under the Education Services for Overseas Students Act.

The student visa sub-classes are:

•  Independent ELICOS sector visa

•  Schools sector visa

•  Vocational Education and Training sector visa

•  Higher Education sector visa

•  Postgraduate Research Sector visa

•  Non Award sector visa

•  AusAID or Defense sector visa

•  Student Guardian visa

There is a five level assessment system that assesses the student's ability to comply with the visa conditions. These levels have been compiled by past statistical data and are based on a country by country basis to each individual sub-class of student visa. Assessment level 1 is the lowest level and assessment level 5 is the highest. The higher the student's assessment level the more evidence that will be required to prove that the student is genuine.

The student will be required to prove that they are genuine and will comply with the conditions of their visa, that they meet the English language requirements and that they have the ability to meet the financial requirements.

Students maybe required satisfying other requirements depending on the sub-class of visa being applied for and the assessment level of the applicant. These may include the age of the student, evidence of certain levels of education have been met, that the course to be undertaken will be beneficial to the applicant in future employment opportunities.
